BARKLEY LOOKED over at Duncan, trapped as he was in amongst the llamas. They were honking at him—although none had spit so far—and sniffing. Barkley tried not to laugh, but he couldn’t help it. This was Lori’s usual initiation for the… uninitiated. After she’d put Barkley through it during his first visit to the sanctuary, she’d explained that she recognized the “keepers” right away from their response to the llamas. If they didn’t run screaming, Lori was pretty sure they weren’t just here for the cute and cuddly babies.

“Got a new female coming over later,” Lori announced as she came to stand beside Barkley. “Owner said she lost her cria and her mate all within a two-month period.” Barkley frowned and tilted his head to the side. “Said she’s not eating or sleeping and has lost too much weight. They don’t wanna give her up, but they don’t want to watch her die, either.” Lori pulled off her gloves and shoved them down the front of her overalls. “Called me to see if I might be able to bring her back around.”

“Poor little love,” Barkley sighed.

“How’s he doin’?” Lori wiped the back of her hand across her forehead and looked over at Duncan. “He complained yet?”

“No,” Barkley said with a laugh. “I may get an earful later on, but he’s passing with flying colors so far.”

“Seems like a hard worker,” Lori acknowledged and slapped Barkley on the back. She began to walk away and then turned. “Not too hard on the eyes, either.” She winked and Barkley wondered just how hot his skin would get.

Barkley had never discussed his sexuality with Lori, but then he’d never hidden it from anyone either. So all Lori would have to do is look him up—which Barkley was sure she’d done after getting a check for more than three hundred thousand dollars—to discover that he was a homosexual. And if Lori did know, and if she had a problem with it, she’d never said one word in front of Barkley. Of course, considering what she’d just observed about Duncan, Barkley was willing to bet she wouldn’t have a problem with people who loved animals loving each other.

Barkley looked over at Duncan again and smiled, deciding to put him out of his misery. He’d passed the test with flying colors. Duncan was now among the initiated.

“Hey, you!” Barkley called out as he passed through the gate to the llama pen.

“What?” Duncan stood up, took his shirt out of his back pocket, and wiped his forehead. “Am I doing it wrong?”

Barkley approached and raised an eyebrow. “You don’t do anything wrong.”

Duncan’s jaw dropped momentarily, and then he was laughing out loud. “Throwing yourself at me in front of the llamas? Do you have no shame?”

“If I did,” Barkley said as he removed his own shirt and pressed himself against Duncan’s sweaty torso. “I wouldn’t be doing this.” Barkley shoved his hands inside of Duncan’s back pockets and squeezed the hard globes of his ass while he brought their lips together, his tongue invading Duncan’s mouth almost immediately.
